The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate: “New Fines Aim to Stem the Tide of ‘Orphan’ Oil and Gas Wells in Louisiana”
An article published about a new rule to plug oil and gas wells in Louisiana cites statistics from a 2020 report about the costs and benefits of such an effort.
Plugging all of Louisiana’s orphan wells could employ just over 1,000 oil workers full-time for one year. It would also cut methane emissions by 558 metric tons per year – the equivalent of the annual greenhouse gas emissions from 3,000 cars, according to a 2020 report by Columbia University and Resources for the Future, a Washington D.C. environmental policy think tank.
