This feature includes a data visualization from RFF's 2024 Global Energy Outlook.
The IEA and OPEC were once closely aligned on their energy forecasts, but now have vastly different views on the future of oil. The IEA believes the world will reach peak oil in 2029, consuming 105.6 mn barrels a day. OPEC, a cartel of oil-producing countries led by Saudi Arabia, sees no peak, with oil use rising to at lest 116 mn barrels a day in 2045.
