E&E News: “Brazil Prepares to Launch South America's First Carbon Market”
RFF Fellow Milan Elkerbout is quoted on the positive international implications of Brazil’s new carbon market.
A market in Brazil also could help persuade its major trading partners Argentina, Colombia, and Chile, said Milan Elkerbout, director of the international climate policy initiative at Resources for the Future, a US research nonprofit.
“It's always a good sign when an economy as large and fast-growing as” Brazil's commits to putting a price on carbon emissions, Elkerbout said. “It sends an important signal” to similar and slightly smaller economies including Indonesia and Nigeria. Brazil has the world’s 10th-largest economy, according to the International Monetary Fund.
